Portland House was completed in 1935 for the wealthy bachelor Geoffrey Henry Bushby.

The drawing room leads out onto a terrace with sea views.

An original arched display cabinet set into the wall.

Though the house appears small from the outside, the interior was spacious and luxurious, it was built for entertaining.

The commission came courtesy of Geoffrey Henry Bushby, was a young bachelor with a private income, an estate in Hertfordshire, and no need to work. He was at Eton when the First World War broke out, and spent the last year of the war in the Irish Guards. He then travelled, spending a few years in California. He mixed with high society and there is a suggestion that he may have been an acquaintance of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Bushby commissioned Portland House with a view to it being his seaside retreat. Curiously, for such a contemporary design, he furnished it with eighteenth-century pieces from his family home, possibly as a pro-tem measure, for he never got to really enjoy it, dying after a short illness in London on Christmas Eve, 1935. Geoffrey Bushby was just 36 and the house had not been long completed.
